I'm slowly getting back into the cooking swing but I'm afraid I sort of "dropped the ball" with the MH5 cooking road trip. After flipping through lots of cookbooks and magazines on Friday night I still had no clue as to what I wanted RGF to cook by the time we set out for their house on Saturday afternoon. We spent two hours driving there and while I should have been using the time to plan dinner I opted to entertain Tom by singing along to the radio and changing the lyrics of songs to add my own little "touches". It was fun, and made the trip seem to go by faster but by the time we pulled into the parking lot of the major supermarket out there I still had no ideas about dinner except "something with asparagus".
That quickly got shot out of the water when we got to the produce section. The asparagus looked like it had gone through hell, and was completely unappealing so, a quick look around and my eyes fell on a really nice display of collard greens. RGF makes really good greens, and the supermarket even had fatback so, "something with asparagus" turned into collard greens, and porkchops. Even RGF was disappointed with the ingredients and told me so, in that scolding/I love you way that only really old, good friends can get away with. I was forgiven, dinner was great. I managed to get a few pictures of the activities...even though I spent a good portion of the time RGF was cooking being a "Chatty Cathy" and drinking wine. The highlight of watching RGF cook was a last minute super secret surprise box of cornbread mix (the baked loaf pictured above) that RGF decided to make with dinner. In trying to keep with my theme of going loco with meals RGF dumped about half a bottle of hotsauce into the mix and set it in the oven to bake. The results were spicy and fragrant and went very well with dinner. We had a great time, dinner was delicious, the cornbread was awesome and there's nothing like seeing old friends to boost your mood, especially after this seemingly endless winter. Next time we go I'll make more efforts to be better prepared, and get RGF to cook something incredible and I'll try to keep up with the pictures and do less chatting so I can write a better entry about it and include step-by-step pictures.
