Yup- I'm just sitting here relaxing, drinking a cup of tea and licking a spoon I found under the couch that still had some peanut butter on it. ack NO! I'm just kidding. There wasn't even that much cat hair on it NO! I'm kidding about the spoon, REALLY.
The March-April issue of The Magazine of La Cucina Italiana came in the mail today (the link takes you to their English translated website). I've been subscribing to this magazine for about 5 years now. I really like it a lot. There's always a nice story about a beautiful place in Italy I have yet to visit, a wine story, some unusual recipes I always say I'm going to try and somehow never do, there's always a feature story on an interesting ingredient in every issue that I never buy but like learning about. If nothing else let's hope the new issue inspires me to want to cook over the weekend. Our refrigerator is practically empty save for about 5 eggs, 3 kinds of butter, some desert wine, and milk. I took The Beast and Precious out this morning for their Sears Portraits weekly feeding, perhaps I'll bake some bread this weekend. Anyhow, while I hem and haw over what I'm going to be cooking in the next few days I'll continue with the last installment of my series (drumroll please) Web-logs I Enjoy!
Mise En Place-Alan's site was one of the first sites I started reading when I realized there were people out there who kept web-logs about food. Alan is like the Cary Grant of food blogs. He's always so suave, so sophisticated yet so friendly and good natured and casual in his approach. He enjoys good food, enjoys cooking good food and has one fabulous collection of dishes. I go to his site just as much for the dishes as I do for the recipes and the writing. A really nice site.
-Playing with my food, and other things-Paul's site is a real favorite of mine. Not just about food, but many other topics as well. He's friendly and funny, he grows mushrooms, and makes sausage, he takes some great pictures, and going to his site almost always makes me smile and feel good. A real highlight for me, especially after a bad day at work is visiting Paul's site, just see what he's cooking, or what Twlya and "Ove" Glove are up to, or to see any number of other topics that can be found at Pauls site. He provides some excellent information and a vast number of links to difficult and hard to find suppliers too. Paul always has something that keeps you interested and coming back for more. A must site to visit.
-Quiltr Mary Beth has a really good site that has a little of everything. A little food, some extremely beautiful quits which she makes herself and are a must see. There's gorgeous photography and she also runs the The Society for the Protection and Preservation of Fruitcake website. Like me she cooks and shares with her co-workers and gets good vibes out of doing so. A great all around site and Mary Beth is quite a talented artist. A really nice site to see.
-Sir Lunchalot The title to Domenic's web-log always makes me chuckle. I like it. What endeared me to Domenic's site was a recipe he posted for Sfinci, yummy Sicilian donuts that I haven't had in years but thanks to Domenic I will be making and sinking my teeth into very soon. Always good, interesting reading here, and just recently he was accepted as a volunteer cook in the James Beard program. It can't get more exciting than this. His first post about how it went is up on the site now and makes for a fascinating read. A nice web-site.
-Struggle in a Bungalow Kitchen-Leah writes so beautifully, and on many topics, not just food. I enjoy going to her web-log because there's always interesting, thoughtful, sincere, writing here and while she too is trying to learn more about cooking I can't even begin to count the number of times she's taught me something just from writing about her own experiences. I really admire her style and her web-log.
-The Hungry Tiger This site is vegetarian with a lot of class. The writing is good, the recipes are delicious and there isn't any "preaching" about the Vegetarian lifestyle that I sometimes am put off by when I encounter other vegetarians who can be a bit hardcore. The emphasis is vegertatrian meals using fresh ingredients and from recipes that can be found in many many cookbooks. There's no "facon" (fake bacon) BLT's or recipes using meat substitutes. What is so nice about this site is that you really can have a meatless lifestlye and not have to eat fake looking meat to get by. This site shows you how in one nicely designed and classy way.
-What We Ate Carl and Nadia have a lovely website that I enjoy going to often. For a while they had stopped updating and I was worried they had abandoned the site but much to my pleasure they are back and posting delicious recipes, good stories about food and are starting to add more pictures. A really nice site.
-I'm a Dad I like to read Parent Blogs too and Aaron's blog about his experiences as a first time Dad and other stuff is a really good blog to read. Well written and with a sense of humor that's charming and funny I enjoy reading about how much he really loves his son and wife. The pictures of the little guy are way too cute.
-The Dad Chronicles Another fine site with some excellent writing about being a Father. Thoughtful and insightful, it's a pleasure to read about parenting from a Dad's point of view. Often times funny and heartwarming this site and the companion site -Booklinker which is his new and very excellent book review site are must reads here at MurrayHill 5.
-Nobody Knows Anything It's kind of funny how I found Diane's web-log. I was just looking at the recently updated list on the Movable type Forum one day when her blog name made me chuckle, so I clicked on it. After reading for about 10 minutes and thinking to myself this was a site I wanted to bookmark, my eye caught her sidebar links and I noticed she already had a link on her site to mine! I emailed her and it turns out we found each others blog the same way within days from each other. I've enjoyed her site ever since. One of the first people to start keeping an online web-journal Diane has come back to web-journaling after taking some time off. I admire Diane's writing and her right to the point no holds barred style. She's intelligent, opinionated, funny and a really nice person. She tries to journal everyday on a vast array of topics and maintains a varied and very interesting list of links. Her article Why Web Journals Suck is very interesting and thought provoking. I really enjoy Diane's site.
-Se Hace Camino Al Andar The web journal of a teacher at an inner-city High School in NYC. Year 1 is done and year 2 has started and sadly I see our Teacher getting more and more discouraged as the politics and the system begin to wear her down. I hope it's something that can be remedied NYC needs good teachers it would be a shame to lose this one.
-Mimi Smartypants I absolutely adore Mimi's website. I look forward to her entries and am never disappointed. Well written and laugh out loud almost in tears funny Mimi is a tour-de-force of good writing and good humor. I cannot say more you must see for yourself.
A special thanks to Blaine who doesn't have a web-log but is always welcome to come here and write about food and give out good advice. Thanks Blaine!
Well, that wraps up my list of web-logs I enjoy reading on a regular basis. I hope I was able to send you somewhere new and you were able to get as much enjoyment from these sites as I do. I am off to bed...once again I stayed up way too late- yikes!
